Fabric first (the least intrusive wins)
- Roof/loft insulation: Top up to modern depths; use breathable materials in older roofs.
- Floor insulation: Liftable timber floors can take slab or quilt insulation with minimal visual change.
- Draught-proofing: Chimney balloons, brush strips and letter-plate covers retain charm while cutting heat loss.
Windows (keep the look, boost the comfort)
Where replacements are restricted, opt for secondary glazing or slimline double glazing that preserves sightlines. Maintain or replicate original mullions and glazing bars to satisfy conservation requirements.
Heating & controls
- Smart thermostats/TRVs: Evidences controllability without fabric impact.
- Boiler optimisation or high-efficiency replacements: Where gas/oil remains, modern, right-sized units cut bills.
- Heat-pump readiness: Improve emitters (larger radiators or UFH) and insulation first; then consult planners on siting ASHP units with acoustic screening.
Renewable options (case-by-case)
- Solar PV: Often acceptable on rear roof slopes, outbuildings or ground mounts with screening.
- Solar thermal: Discreet collectors on less visible aspects.
- Rainwater harvesting: Below-ground tanks with subtle covers.
Documentation & goodwill
